Uncle Hammer lays down the law.

When Stacey admits that he gave his new coat to TJ, Uncle Hammer gave him a tongue-lashing. One of the things he tells Stacey is, "You care what a lot of useless people say 'bout you you'll never get anywhere, 'cause there's a lotta folks don't want you to make it."
What does Hammer mean by this?
Have you ever found yourself being too worried about what other people say and think about you? What can you learn from Stacey's experience?

  1. I think what uncle hammer means is that a lot of people are not going to want Stacey to succeed in life if he wants the best for himself then he can't listen to them. I also think everyone has at some point been to worried about what someone else thought. I think everyone can learn from this to.

  2. He means that he just gets caught in the moment of T.J when he said he will give it back when he grows into it, but by then he will have got a new coat and won't care about that one and T.J will carelessly throw it away before giving it to him. Yes, I have once caught somedoby trying to get something of mine, but before I gave that away I thought about how I can just keep it so when I'm ready I will for sure have it and it will be brand new. I learned that it would be smart to listen to your parents and don't give away gifts just because they are too small.

  3. When uncle Hummer says this he means that listening and caring what people say to you or about you is going to hold back in life and you won't anywhere in life. Also if you let that happend then that means you're letting the enemy win, and they want to you feel bad. Yes I have been worried about what other people say or think about me all the time. I can learn from Stacy's experience that you shouldn't listen to what people say if they reject you they aren't your friends and you'll let them win if you do listen to them.

  4. Uncle Hammer means that some people will try to put Stacy down just because they don't like him. Since they are living in a time when whites are prejudice towards blacks, there will be a lot of white people who will say rude things to Stacy just because they don't want him to make it. I constantly find myself being to worried about what other people think and say about me, but I think that I have learned from Stacy's experience that people say mean things like that because they are jealous. Just like T. J. was jealous of Stacy's sweater so he convinced him that it looked bad on him so that he could have it for himself. Which leads to another lesson of making sure that what people say and think does not get to you like it did to Stacy because it only caused him trouble.

  5. Uncle Hammer means that you shouln't give your personal belongings away just because someone says that they will give it back (because most often people don't). Yes, somebody has tried to persuade me into letting them "borrow" my things. But I thought about it and say maybe next time, because I didn't believe they would give it back.

  6. I think uncle Hammer meant that in life there is going to be a lot of people that won't want you to succeed in life and if you want to get to were you want to be you can't listen to them, so what you can learn from this experience is not to care about what people think and be yourself.
